Against the current

Names of the largest Alliances are well known even on the most distant planets of the Universe, but this time a small alliance with only ten members, the Alliance of the United Galactic Colonies (Egyesített Galaktikus Kolóniák Szövetsége) is taking the floor to introduce themselves.

As I’m standing on the runway of the editorial office waiting for the spokesman of AUGC (EGKSZ) warlord gal6.com, I can’t think of anything else but one question: what could motivate such a small alliance, and is it even possible to survive with only a few members. Before I could answer my own questions, an engine of a spaceship breaks the silence. Within a couple of minutes a bit rusty ship takes off next to me, and moments later a Khaduuii warlord appears in its door whose face looks tried, but still his appearance shows his power.

Firstly, gal6.com apologizes because of the delay, then, as we’re walking towards our meeting room, he tells me the reason for his late arrival: there was an attack against one of their member’s planet. – I simply couldn’t let him down. The enemy outnumbered us, but together we could repel them. – says he with a pale smile on his face.

As we are sitting down in the scriptorium, we’re already talking about the name of their Alliance which, as he told me, they had to change. – At first, there was only the two of us: Warlord Khadúri placitum who’s the leader of the Alliance and me. Then we had been called the Alliance of the United Galactic Khaduuii, but later members of other races joined, so we changed the name. – As I got to know, there are some experienced warlords in the Alliance now, gal6.com mentions Megyer and Vulgar in this matter.

As I ask him about their previously fought battles, I see pride in his eyes. “Sadly it’s very hard to survive due to the small number of our members, but since all of us are very desperate and feel committed towards the Alliance we could more or less balance the fact that we are few in numbers. We have fought many battles so far, but we have always managed to stand up; moreover, since we have defended ourselves pretty successfully, we have discouraged some larger Alliances from attacking us.”

As I’m listening to his stories about the great battles, I can’t resist not to ask him: is there any point in the seemingly hopeless fight like theirs. First, he looks at me with a serious face, but then he breaks up in laughter. Of course, they will hold on until the end, but they are planning to contact other smaller alliances with which they could fight side by side against the large ones.

When I ask him about recruitment, he tells me that they are not recruiting actively, but they gladly welcome everybody who wants to join them.  – Those who’d like to be a part of an Alliance where they are respected, and where members help each other without expecting anything in return, are welcome in the AUGC. Anyone can join us, there’s only one condition: they have to be active members of the Alliance…

Although I’d like him to stay, his beeper breaks our conversation. It turns out there’s an upcoming attack against an allied planet so he has to leave right away.

As I watch him flying away, I’m answering my own question. Yes, it is possible to survive.
